The five organizing partners, Kylián Foundation/Productions, Korzo Theater, Holland Dance Festival, Zuiderstrandtheater and Nederlands Dans Theater are looking back on a sold-out run of the first of five programs honoring Jiří Kylián in his resident city on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
The kick-off took place at Korzo theater on March 28, 29 and 30 2017. During the opening performance of ‘Celebrating Kylián!’ on March 28, 2017, Jiří Kylián was made Honorary Citizen of The Hague by the mayor, Pauline Krikken. An honorary citizenship is rarely awarded. It is the highest recognition the City of The Hague can bestow on an individual.
The first program included the acclaimed ‘Last Touch First’, created as an independent production in 2008, ‘Birth-Day’, one of the landmark pieces created for NDT 3 in 2001 and Kylián’s latest creation, ‘Scalamare’, a short film. Program No. 1 of ‘Celebrating Kylián!’ proved to be the perfect opening of a series of six events, which spread out from March to November 2017. It was an intimate, festive, nostalgic, joyful and sometimes sad occasion, reflecting on the artistry of this great choreographer and capturing Jiří Kylián in his current state of heart and mind. Although, not naturally inclined to seek the spotlight, the master choreographer seemed to immensely enjoy revisiting ‘Last Touch First’ and ‘Birth-Day’ and their sublime casts of dancers and to personally share his latest creation with those lucky audience members who were able to secure a ticket to one of these three sold-out performances. Luckily, there is much more to come – and not to miss – in the months to follow.
Next events are:
Program No. 2 combines ‘East Shadow’ (2013), a haunting duet with spectacular live piano music by Tomoko Mukaiyama (May 10, 11, 12, 2017, Korzo theater) and ‘Free Fall’ (2016), a mesmerizing photo installation, best described as an intimate look into the mind and imagination of Jiří Kylián (May 8 – 12, 2017, Korzo theater).
Program No.3 features young dancers of Codarts Rotterdam and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in a collage of Kylián works, including ‘Falling Angels’ and ‘Stonehenge’ a group worked created by Kylián in 2013 for the dancers of Codarts Rotterdam.
After the summer ‘Celebrating Kylián!’ continues with an exhibition put together from the archive’s treasure chest of Nederlands Dans Theater (September 2017) and the much anticipated evenings of Kylián masterpieces for the big stage, performed exclusively in The Hague at Zuiderstrandtheater by Les Ballets de Monte Carlo (October 2017) and The Norwegian National Ballet (November 2017).
